Making your own ghee is SUPER simple and much more cost effective than buying pre-made ghee from the stores. Plus, the taste is so much better. So, let's jump right into it!

What You'll Need:

  • One pound of high quality, organic, unsalted butter. The better the quality the better the ghee.
  • Sauce pan
  • Cheese cloth or fine wire strainer
  • Container for your ghee

The Process:

  1. Unwrap your butter and place it in a sauce pan.
  2. Turn the dial on your stove to a medium setting.
  3. Allow the butter to melt.
  4. Once it is fully melted, turn your dial down to a low setting.
  5. Allow the butter to simmer.
  6. It will take anywhere from 15-30 miunutes depending on your stove and the butter.
  7. As your butter simmers you will notice the white fats gradually falling to the bottom of the pan.
  8. There is no need to skim the white from the top of the butter. Eventually, all or most of this will fall to the bottom of the pan.
  9. As it settles on the bottom of the pan it will turn to a golden brown color.
  10. Continue to listen to the ghee. Once the small pops are done, then your ghee is done!
  11. Be careful not to overcook the ghee. It is similar to waiting for popcorn to cook and for that final popcorn sound.
  12. Once the pops are done, remove the pan from the heat. Your ghee should be are a warm amber color.
  13. Place your cheese cloth over your container and slowly pour your ghee into the designated jar. Allow it to cool completly before covering with a lid.
  14. Ghee can be stored in a cupboard for months at a time.
  15. Enjoy it in coffee, to cook with, on toast, wherever you would use butter or oil!
